Thelonious Monk with Me

I went a little Monk-crazy today and downloaded several of his Riverside recordings.

  • Misterioso
  • Brilliant Corners
  • Himself
  • Alone in San Francisco

No, I didn't have them before. Until now I've been filling my Monk needs with a combination of a 3-disc set of Columbia recordings, his album of Duke Ellington songs, a bunch of Brad Mehldau, and my own pitiful plonkings.

Also picked up:

  • Mulligan Meets Monk
  • Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane
  • Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins
  • 5 by Monk by 5
  • the first five tracks of Monk in Paris: Live At The Olympia

Needless to say I'm enjoying myself.

Highlight so far is Johnny Griffin's solo (tenor sax) in Let's Cool One on Misterioso. Or maybe Ahmed Abdul-Malik (bass) in In Walked Bud, also on Misterioso. Or maybe, the whole Misterioso album. is pretty good for jazz. I noticed that this month they brought in some new Steve Lacy albums (they already had a ton --- how many did he record?), so I'll be getting those too. Monk and Lacy go hand in hand. Plus, all of this music cost me $15.

Excuse me, I have some listening to do.
