I had to visit Fox News for work.
Here is their current viewer poll:
When natural disasters strike, should U.S. taxpayers continue to foot the clean-up bill for those who live in risky environments?
75% right now are saying "NO".
The poll seems to not be about recent disasters in Asia when you actually read the comments. But, I don't think my first reaction was unreasonable, seeing that lonely poll floating on the front page of the Views section, with no context but the context of recent disasters to go on.
I just realized the other thing that bothers me about the poll wording---"continue to foot". Seems like an attempt to bias the responses. This is a frequent tactic in polls on foreign aid. People who look to drum up opposition to foreign aid are often accused of trying to create the feeling of "aid fatigue" in the people they poll. Counter-polls have been done that show that when people are told how little of the budget is actually foreign aid, many change their answer.
I don't think $350 million is "footing the bill" for all of the tsunami cleanup. Maybe we've upped the amount; I haven't been paying attention too closely.
