I finally finished the Sunday NYT puzzle from two weeks ago, "Risky Business," by Brendan Emmett Quigley.
I didn't like it. The wordplay was too painful. "Holdem Caulfield" as the answer to "J.D. Salinger character's favorite game?" was pretty funny, as was "Don't roulette out" as the answer to "Please consider playing the wheel again?". But "craps suzette" for "Game played with dice set on fire?"? Maybe it's just a vegan blindspot, not knowing what a Crêpe Suzette is.
Other commenters seem to agree that this was a tough one. We won't talk about how long it took me to solve it, with help.
At first I was angry about "Split personality?" being "Croatian" — an answer I figured out just by elimination — but after understanding the explanation I'll admit it's pretty clever.
Mostly I'm just disappointed that the answer to "Meanies" wasn't "Owens".
Now back to this past Sunday's, which is going much better.
