Ubuntu jobs [11 May 2006|09:20pm]

I don't want any of the people I work with to leave, so all of you close your eyes, but some of the rest of you might be interested in these Ubuntu job postings.

The sysadmin job suggests that you “ideally have some familiarity with Debian.” Heh.

Falwell misquoted [11 May 2006|09:36pm]

Correction: In the original version of this report, NEWSWEEK misquoted Falwell as referring to "assault ministry." In fact, Falwell was referring to "a salt ministry" -- a reference to Matthew 5:13, where Jesus says "Ye are the salt of the earth." We regret the error.

Found this while reading this post and thread about the recent press the Liberty University debate team has received (Newsweek, Sunday New York Times Magazine). These articles say a lot of things like, "The Liberty team is currently ranked No. 1 in the country, above Harvard (14th) and all the other big names." By any meaningful definition of truth, these things are untrue. Kind of like when that guy on The Apprentice a while back claimed to be a "debate champion". You can't make such a claim in full knowledge of the many metrics that exist for ranking and not say which metric you are using. This kind of trumpeting in the press is not uncommon in debate, but it's very rare that it reaches such a wide audience. It's usually done in the appropriate local papers.

Anyway. I just thought the Falwell bit was funny. I didn't really set out to link to the post that criticizes Falwell's debate team and heaps praise on my alma mater (who won the National Debate Tournament this year, by the way, making them by a much more commonly used metric "No. 1 in the country").
