The Rapture Dead Hand [08 Nov 2005|02:12am]
[ mood | restless ]

Rapture Letters is a site that promises to send an e-mail from you to the names you specify, after the Rapture happens and you have presumably left the planet.

Note that these letters go out on the first Friday after the Rapture. Your designates will receive another letter every Friday after that.

This may come as a shock to you, but the one who sent you this has been taken up to heaven.

(What poor sysadmin is going to be stuck behind running this operation?)

Notebooks bound with old library book covers [08 Nov 2005|08:26pm]
[ mood | artistic ]

Sorry for the Boing Boing repeat, but these blank books by Ex Libris made with the covers of throwaway library books might interest the poets, writers, and dirty hippies in the crowd.

Keep flipping through the catalog --- they get better later on. I'm really fond of the one with the Secret of the Old Mill Hardy Boys cover. And of course the Dr. Seuss ones are great too.

Was it Natalie Goldberg who suggested writing in notebooks with cartoon characters on them, to avoid taking yourself and your writing too seriously? I can't remember. But I think the Hardy Boys would fill the bill there.

Immortal Technique and Tony Montana [08 Nov 2005|11:47pm]
[ mood | nerdy ]

Immortal Technique keeps me busy tracking shit down. I feel pretty ignorant, just as ignorant as I feel reading the Cantos. Scratch the surface a bit and realize how much I must be missing without even knowing --- he's the "Encyclopedia Hispanica", and his "metaphors are dirty, like herpes, but harder to catch." And I'm just talking about the stuff in English.

So, what does it mean to call someone a "fake Tony Montana"? This is in "No Me Importa" on Revolutionary Volume 1 (which, by the way, is one of the best beats ever).

Oh right. Now that my memory is refreshed, suddenly a lot of things come to light. Many Montana lines pop up unmarked in some form on Tech tracks.

He's not alone. I just happened to download Think Differently Music: Wu-Tang Meets the Indie Culture yesterday, which not only has Jim Jarmusch intermissions (isn't it time that Jarmusch get a Wu name? The generator suggests "Tha Ever So Weary Assistant"), but also has La the Darkman on "Verses" dropping references to the A-Team and Halliburton, and the line, "my persona's like Tony Montana".

I think my next assignment is telekinesis:

this is about judo
it ain't about Jesus
and you shouldn't fuckin talk about telekinesis
nigga please
movin' shit witcha mind?
try movin' your moms out the projects witcha rhymes

(from "Crossing the Boundary", Revolutionary Volume 2)

I know enough to know better that he wasn't just looking for a rhyme with "Jesus". I thought at first he was talking about Jean Grae because of the X-Men connection, but that ain't it, since she's on one of his tracks.

Technique's site is coming up "Account Suspended" (maybe someone in a position of authority finally listened to the Bin Laden Remixes), but he has a show coming up at the Middle East in Cambridge on Nov 20, rescheduled from October.
