Asleep at the reactor [20 Jul 2005|11:22pm]

Owners of a nuclear power plant in Plymouth are fined for some Homeresque behavior by their employees.

Recommendations to use more nuclear power as the best way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and stave off global warming have been crossing my path more and more frequently as of late.

If you are wondering how safe nuclear power plants are these days, consider this event, as described in the Globe.

In a rare move, federal regulators fined the owner of the Pilgrim nuclear power plant in Plymouth yesterday for several safety violations involving a control room supervisor falling asleep on the job while a reactor operator recorded the nap on a cellphone camera without waking him up.

Which part is the most frightening? That a fine like this is a "rare move"? That a supervisor was asleep on the job? That someone (undoubtedly a person after my own heart) was basically moblogging the incident instead of doing anything about it?

In their defense, the nap did only last 4 minutes.
