Las Vegas monorail [25 Jan 2005|10:49pm]

This is old news, but I'm just now getting to it. I'm sure glad I wasn't on any of these trains:

First, a technician opened the doors on Aug. 16 on the wrong side of the cars --- facing a 25 foot drop --- while passengers were on board. Then, on Sept. 1, a 60-pound wheel assembly fell off a moving car. A week later, on Sept. 8, a 6-inch-wide washer came off another train. Nobody was hurt in the incidents...

---Boston Globe, December 26, 2004

I know how awake I am in the morning on the train, and if an operator opened the door on the wrong side of the train, I'd probably step right out without looking.

The idea behind the monorail in Las Vegas is to be the first profitable public transit system. This article had some statistics about the returns from Boston's system:

...Boston's commuter rail system recovers 60 percent, the light-rail system recovers 31 percent, the ferry services recover 55 percent, and the bus service recovers 44 percent of its cost, according to the trade group American Public Transportation Association. The rest is covered by taxpayer subsidies.
