For the crazy libertarians in the audience (from The Onion):

Libertarian Reluctantly Calls Fire Department
CHEYENNE, WY—After attempting to contain a living-room blaze started by a cigarette, card-carrying Libertarian Trent Jacobs reluctantly called the Cheyenne Fire Department Monday. "Although the community would do better to rely on an efficient, free-market fire-fighting service, the fact is that expensive, unnecessary public fire departments do exist," Jacobs said. "Also, my house was burning down." Jacobs did not offer to pay firefighters for their service.

Apparently, this is really a word. From Merriam-Webster:

cloud-cuckoo-land \klowd-KOO-koo-land\ noun
: a realm of fantasy or of whimsical or foolish behavior

Trouble for us poets.

(WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Poets die young -- younger than novelists, playwrights and other writers, a U.S. researcher says...)

"Perks" [24 Apr 2004|08:39am]
[ mood | ditzy ]

I did not know that this is where the description of job benefits as "perks" came from. I guess I always thought that they were called that because they were high points of the job or something. Things that make one feel, um, perky. This makes a lot more sense.

perquisite \PER-kwuh-zut\ noun
*1 : a privilege, gain, or profit incidental to regular
salary or wages; especially : one expected or promised
2 : gratuity, tip
3 : something held or claimed as an exclusive right or
possession
