I think this is my favorite use of Google Maps yet.
You can measure walking distances with Google Maps now.
I learned that I walk about 0.3 miles to work each day, from the train station to my office. That's a pretty nice commute.
This is a great service for people to manage carless lives. The MBTA trip planning site does offer some rudimentary walking directions for Boston, but I've been wishing for some better tools in the world of the Internets for pedestrians and cyclists. Directions that don't assume you have to follow one-way street signs, for example. This tool is a nice step toward that, because you can do things like measure out a route that takes you on foot across a park.
