Is Bottled Water Safer Than Tap Water? Please... [Science Says] [11 Jul 2009|08:00pm]
consumerist

Bottled water isn't any safer than tap water, and could actually be more dangerous, according to a report from the Government Accounting Office. The big difference lies in the government regulator: tap water is covered by the Safe Water Drinking Act, administered by the aggressive and powerful Environmental Protection Agency, while bottled water falls under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act overseen by the powerless anything-goes industry-lovers over at the Food and Drug Administration.

In fact, bottled water makers are not required to disclose even as much information as your local municipality. If you live in a city of 10,000 residents or more, you probably receive a copy of a water report each year. The Solid Waste Disposal Act requires that public water systems test tap water for various contaminants using certified laboratories and issue a water-quality report, called the consumer-confidence report (CCR), once a year. (For particularly toxic contaminants, the SWDA requires results to be reported within 24 hours.) The CCR summarizes local drinking water quality, information about the water source, levels of detected contaminants, whether any of the detected contaminants exceed federal levels, as well as information on the potential health effects of certain contaminants. (If you live in a smaller town, consult the EPA's Web site.)

In contrast, bottled water manufacturers don't have to use certified laboratories nor report the results of any water quality testing to the FDA, even if the contaminants exceed federal standards. The GAO study also found that only a small percentage of the 83 bottled water labels looked at, companies contacted, or company Web sites reviewed contained information comparable to that required of tap water.

Consumer Reports tested bottled water in 2000 and found that it was safe when it met FDA standards, which wasn't always the case. All water should be regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency, but since it isn't, we'll stick with tap water, thank you very much.

my first ethical dilemma [12 Jul 2009|09:57am]

Hey guys. I recently lost my job due to this whole economic down-turn, and just managed to pick up a job at a restaurant/bar near by. Anyone living in Sydney might be familiar with the Bavarian Bier Cafes. I don't have any problem working around meat or serving it, because at the moment, a job is a job and I really NEED this job because I just moved out of home and my father just lost his job as well. There's just one major problem - I think part of the training process involves me TASTING the food. I think I might cry if I have to do this. Has anyone else been in a similar position? I figured I could just memorise all the attributes of the dishes, but this place is pretty professional and strict in staff training. It's getting to the point where I might have to compromise my beliefs so I can have a roof over my head and buy university text books. If a vegan joint would hire me, I would be so happy! But there's not many around. How can I explain to my bosses my beliefs? I've never really had to explain my beliefs before because nobody really cares, so this is going to be a major hurdle for me.

Tiramisu [11 Jul 2009|09:14pm]

[sushineko]
I couldn't find anything in the tags, so I that's why I'm asking for your help! I am looking for a delicious (and hopefully easy) recipe for a vegan version of tiramisu, that even my omni friends will love! Whatever recipe I found online so far called for orange juice or lemons, but I'm very allergic to citrus... So I'm wondering if anyone had a yummy recipe that is free of citrus, or if you could let me know what I could use to substitute orange or lemon juice/lemon peel, etc. with. Thanks heaps for any hints!

Two turntables and a microphone and a mac and a website [11 Jul 2009|10:24pm]
_grandtextauto

Just a quick post here to say I think Beck gets the Web in ways that a lot of contemporary recording artists don’t. While a lot of bands give you discographies and tour dates and bios and the like, maybe a few sample tracks, I’m impressed with the Web strategy Beck is embracing on his site. As far as I can tell, he is not directly promoting his albums, his tour dates, or his merchandising on is site at all. Instead, he is using the Web site as an occasion to make and distribute cool stuff with his friends. His new site has features including Record Club, a project to informally re-record a classic album in a day with other musicians, and release a new track on the site every week. “Irrelevant Topics” will feature Beck informally interviewing other musicians at length about whatever comes to mind, released in serial installments. The first part of the first interview, with Tom Waits, is a fantastic discussion with one of America’s best songwriters. Planned Obsolescence is a weekly DJ set mixed by Beck’s crew. In an age when anybody can put on a pirate hat and download any album without paying a dime, this type of creative approach to using the web as a experimental platform for music and its environments is exactly the type of thing that might make me want to support an artist buying his CD or MP3 or concert ticket or T-shirt. Beck’s crew is using Web 2.0ish tools and social media like facebook and vimeo to reach their fan base and share their funky new readymades.

General Motors May Sell Cars Through eBay [Partnerships] [11 Jul 2009|06:00pm]
consumerist

General Motors is considering a partnership with eBay to make it easier for consumers to impulse-buy new vehicles, the recently solvent car maker announced yesterday. Though the deal isn't yet finalized, General Motors would like to sell their vehicles both through traditional auctions and with a "Buy It Now" option.

One G.M. dealer said he had already talked with the company about the program and was excited about it.

The dealer, Inder Dosanjh, who owns Dublin Chevrolet outside San Francisco, said listing new cars on eBay would allow his dealership to get in front of customers who were doing most of their car shopping on the Internet. He said that would include some people who might not have otherwise considered a G.M. car.

For customers, he added, shopping on eBay could take some of the pressure off the negotiation process. "One of the fears the customer has when they walk in the door is that they are going to pay too much for a car," Mr. Dosanjh said. "If they are negotiating a deal on eBay, from their living room, they are in their comfort level."

State franchising laws prohibit car makers from selling directly to consumers, and it looks like dealers will still have a significant amount of leverage, including control over "the inventory and what pricing they have out there." Would you buy a new G.M. through eBay, or is haggling in person with the dealer half the fun?

7-Eleven Asks Consumers To Help Fight Credit Card Companies [Interchange Fees] [11 Jul 2009|04:00pm]
consumerist

7-Eleven plans to serve up your next Slurpee with a petition to Congress protesting unfair credit card fees. No, the fees aren't unfair to you, they're unfair to 7-Eleven. The vendor of last resort is mad about interchange fees, the fees banks charge merchants for accepting a credit card payment. The recent credit card legislation signed into law protected consumers from rate increases, but stayed silent with regards to interchange fees.

7-Eleven says the fees are becoming more burdensome to small businesses as people increasingly use plastic to pay for even minor purchases. These days, Jones noted that it's not unusual for people to buy a pack of gum or cup of coffee with a credit card. He noted that the average purchase at 7-Eleven totals just $6.

"If you're a very low margin business, that kills you," Jones said.

Last year, Jones said 7-Eleven paid $160 million in bank card fees, up from $40 million five years ago — a 300 percent increase.

Interchange fees generated by bank cards totaled $23.99 billion in revenue last year, according to Card & Payment. That accounted for about 19 percent of revenue from bank cards.

While card companies such as Visa and MasterCard set the fees, the revenue is distributed to multiple entities, including the merchant's bank and the issuing bank — with the latter getting the bulk of the fees, said Kate Fitzgerald, associate editor at Cards & Payments.

Creditors sputter out all the usual talking points to defend their interchange fees, saying that lower fees for businesses would raise rates and undermine benefits for consumers, yadda yadda yadda. This is a business-to-business problem, not one that consumers need to add to their already lengthy list of credit card concerns.

Would you consider signing 7-Eleven's petition?

Hi there, fellow Bostonites. I am finishing up grad school at BU this year and moving away from good ol' Allston into an apartment downtown with my boyfriend. I'm looking to sell my bed, and I've posted a few times on Craigstlist and keep getting emails from scammers. I figured I should give lj a try. :-)

Here's the details:

* Full-size frame/mattress
* Sleek dark wood finish
* Tall headboard
* Drawers that come out underneath the bed (for clothing storage)
* Less than a year old; originally bought at Boston Bed Company on Commonwealth Ave. (the model is actually still in the window)

I am asking for $375 but I am willing to negotiate.

Vegan eggplant rollatini [11 Jul 2009|03:22pm]

vegancooking

[erica057]
I made this a few nights ago and intended to take a picture, but it got eaten too quickly :( Anyway, it was absolutely delicious and really easy.

-1 large eggplant, sliced lengthwise into 1/4" slices (I used a mandoline -- if you don't have one you might want to buy two eggplants in case you mess up some of the slices ;) )
-Tomato sauce of choice, I used Muir Glen cabernet marinara
-1 recipe PPK tofu-basil ricotta
-Optional: soy "parmesan" (I skipped this and it was still great)

If you have time, salt/drain/press/rinse the eggplant slices. If not it'll probably still be fine :)

Grill or broil the eggplant slices with a little bit of cooking spray or olive oil on both sides until browned. I broiled them on high for 10 minutes on one side, 5-10 minutes on the other.

Stack up the slices on a plate and cover tightly with aluminum foil. This will cause them to steam so that they're easier to roll up. At this point I made the tofu "ricotta".

Roll up each eggplant slice with about 2oz of the ricotta mix, then place it seam side down in a small casserole dish. Cover the whole thing with tomato sauce, sprinkle with parmesan if using, and bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes. This serves 2-3 people; my husband ate it with whole wheat pasta with olive oil and garlic, I ate it with a spinach salad.

Delta Fined $375,000 For Bumping Passengers [Fines] [11 Jul 2009|02:00pm]
consumerist

The Department of Transportation smacked Delta with a $375,000 fine for ignoring federal laws that require airlines to offer bumped passengers adequate compensation and an explanation of their rights. Inside, a listing of your options if an airline tries to bump you off their flight...

From the Department of Transportation:

Voluntary bumping

Our rules require airlines to seek out people who are willing to give up their seats for some compensation before bumping anyone in- voluntarily. Here's how this works. At the check-in or boarding area, airline employees will look for volunteers when it appears that the flight has been oversold. If you're not in a rush to arrive at your next destination, you can give your reservation back to the airline in exchange for compensation and a later flight.

DOT has not said how much the airline has to give volunteers. This means carriers may negotiate with their passengers for a mutually acceptable amount of money-or maybe a free trip or other benefits. Airlines give employees guidelines for bargaining with passengers, and they may select those volunteers willing to sell back their reservations for the lowest price.

Involuntary bumping

DOT requires each airline to give all passengers who are bumped involuntarily a written statement describing their rights and explaining how the carrier decides who gets on an oversold flight and who doesn't. Those travelers who don't get to fly are frequently entitled to an on-the-spot payment of denied boarding compensation. The amount depends on the price of their ticket and the length of the delay:

  • If you are bumped involuntarily and the airline arranges substitute transportation that is scheduled to get you to your final destination (including later connections) within one hour of your original scheduled arrival time, there is no compensation.
  • If the airline arranges substitute transportation that is scheduled to arrive at your destination between one and two hours after your original arrival time (between one and four hours on international flights), the airline must pay you an amount equal to your one-way fare to your final destination, with a $400 maximum.
  • If the substitute transportation is scheduled to get you to your destination more than two hours later (four hours internationally), or if the airline does not make any substitute travel arrangements for you, the compensation doubles (200% of your fare, $800 maximum).
  • You always get to keep your original ticket and use it on another flight. If you choose to make your own arrangements, you can request an "involuntary refund" for the ticket for the flight you were bumped from. The denied boarding compensation is essentially a payment for your inconvenience.
When a flight is oversold and there are not enough volunteers, some airlines bump passengers with the lowest fares first. Once you have purchased your ticket, the most effective way to reduce the risk of being bumped is to get to the airport early. For passengers in the same fare class the last passengers to check in are usually the first to be bumped, even if they have met the check-in deadline.

Airlines may offer free transportation on future flights in place of a check for denied boarding compensation. However, if you are bumped involuntarily you have the right to insist on a check if that is your preference. Once you cash the check (or accept the free flight), you will probably lose the right to demand more money from the airline later on. However, if being bumped costs you more money than the airline will pay you at the airport, you can try to negotiate a higher settlement with their complaint department. If this doesn't work, you usually have 30 days from the date on the check to decide if you want to accept the amount of the check. You are always free to decline the check(e.g., not cash it) and take the airline to court to try to obtain more compensation.

In a "number of instances" between January and July of last year, Delta didn't ask for volunteers, explain why people were involuntarily chosen, or pay out adequate compensation. We doubt a relatively minor fine will teach Delta much of anything, but at least you can know your federal rights next time an airline tries to take back their seat.

3rd World Animal Liberation [11 Jul 2009|06:15pm]

[distilledvanity]
Is it even possible? I've been living in Morocco for 7 months now and have not been able to achieve anything beyond feeding some animals here and fostering a cute kitten for a week and taking him to a SPANA center there. The animals that need to be liberated are the beasts of burden: donkeys, horses and mules and the monkeys that are chained up and used in tourist traps for pictures.

SPANA tried to look into the monkey situation by contacting the government but they were told that since poor people need money and that helps them put food on the table, they were not going to ban it. It's heartbreaking seeing them pull on their chains but I can't do anything about it.

As for the beasts of burden issue, these people are too poor and rely on animals for their livelihood. Someone in this community mentioned that in order to truly get rid of that, the whole poverty issue needed to be dealt with first, I agree and that's a HUGE issue that I see no way of being able to personally solve.

I know back home in Los Angeles, some activists were saying that volunteering at a shelter is a waste of time since you should using that energy campaigning and doing demos. I actually did both, I did demos for more direct action and volunteered at the humane society because being around animals is therapeutic for me. It does only put a band aid in the situation, but I at least was able to put the band aid on and also fight to prevent the wound in the first place.

Being in Morocco, I did not have that luxury. This place is lucky to have SPANA and they are working to improve the conditions of animals here but they are not working on abolishing anything.

I'll be moving to Bangkok next month, I have never been there but my boyfriend has been there several times, and he's a vegetarian so I should not have trouble finding food. If you know of some good animal rights/welfare organizations to get in touch with there please let me know. There isn't a SPANA center in Thailand. Do they have animal rights in Thailand? I'm hoping since there are a lot of Buddhists, it will be easier to find other vegans, at least there will be a lot of vegetarians. All the SPANA people, however much they loved animals and were really nice, ate meat. I only met one local vegetarian here but she stopped eating meat because it made her sick not for any animals rights reasons.

Do you think it is possible to achieve anything beyond animal welfare in 3rd World countries? If so, how? Is attempting animal welfare enough? I don't feel like it is but I have not figured out what else to do. Not knowing the language/culture doesn't help either. Maybe Thailand will be easier, we'll see...
