POEM

"It's a brave thing
    to know the cheapness of
          the world"
  — Frank O'Hara, "Homage"

railway men shovel stones
a tough ten minutes to my city
"but what's a city?"
cheap flowers fronting
South Street Diner, corner
delivery vans in Chinatown
chewing fat fuckers blocking
traffic, the Leather District:

    "This yours?"
    "No."

Here, tying my hands
in your courageous elbow
I'd cheer you up a bit but
we know good brands
don't come easy —
you've got to hang your head low
    and shop for them.
